My father recently asked me to make another pass looking for WW1 flight sims and that search prompted me to make this thread. There are so many good games that go unnoticed and otherwise forgotten among gamers, and it irritates the hell out of me when I stumble on them and have missed their "prime".

That, and its very hard to keep track of all the games that have loads of potential.

So what this thread is about are games, of any genre, either already released or coming-soon, that are either small-time, un-hyped, generally passed up by the masses, but are fun as hell to play, innovative or something of the like (PC games only though).

Granted this is mostly war periods, Genre's can/will be added to accomodate games added to the list. There also a few "well known" games, but they still get passed up or are reletively unkown by a lot of people.

Also, while most of all of these are war games or simulators, it doesnt have to be, its just, thats what I know best. So please add to the list!

I'm waiting for 50s, 60s, 70s or 80s NATO vs. WP tank simulator with good campaign. With both sides playable.

I'm also dreaming about cold war/WWII-FPS with "the other side" as playable one. German defence of Hurtgen, Chinese/Korean assault on US forces in Korean peninsula with insane amounts of indirect fire, NVA regular defending Ho Chi Minh trail against american air cavalry landing (lots of hueys and phantoms and napalm, boom!), Japanese charge against ABDA defenders in Singapore...

Damn, that would be refreshing.

Il-2 and Operation Flashpoint obscure and/or overlooked?! o_O Knights of the Sky was also quite a decent seller from what I remember in the beginning of the nineties. If the above and even Stalker are in the list, might as well include the Silent Hunter series =).

Also Introversion's stuff's quite awesome: Defcon, Darwinia and Uplink.

Well, I know some of it is reletively well known by many of us and groups like us, but I still see people ask about OFP and IL-2 from screens because they've never heard of it or seen it. And the Knights of the sky is a new version (not sure if it has any links with the original), but speaking of which, there was a couple page thread on a WW1 flying sim that I cannot find for the life of me, anyone know where it is?

Update coming right up though.

How about adding some RPG's to that list`? :)

Lol, I love my RPG's but Oblivion and Final Fantasy don't really constitute as un-hyped or at least reletively unknown, not sure about Morrowind either.

I can't remember back for how big Secret of Evermore, FF3 (US), Secret of Mana, Earth Bound or Super Mario RPG were, so....

Just give some input into what you would like to see on the list or something you stumbled on that hasn't been released yet. :)

"Arx Fatalis" is a great underdog (Action-)RPG. Might fit on your list.

"Arcanum" is downright awesome, but I'm not really sure how hyped it was. Just include it. Since you also have IL2 on that list, Arcanum can definately be included too.

"Planescape Torment" kind of slipped under a lot of people's radar because of Baldur's Gate 2 and Icewind Dale. The character development is limited and shallow but the setting, the dark humor and the general sick atmosphere more than make up for that.

The Mario RPG thing for the N64 was hyped. It just had bad luck that it was one of the last high profile titles for the N64 and I think the next generation of consoles was already out and kicking so it drowned in that a bit. In my opinion it isn't that good anyway. Since your list is PC-only anyway we can scrap that in either case.

"Gothic" (the original) has to be on that list too. It was a rather buggy game when it was released and there was little hype surrounding it. It had an innovative setting, great gritty dialogue as opposed to the common supernoble kind of stuff peple in earlier RPGs had to say and a thick atmosphere.
It gathered a big fan following pretty fast (most of them only came after it landed in the bargain bin...). Gothic 2 was less innovative but with its expansion it became as great or better than Gothic 1 but it was pretty hyped already for "Gothic" already made its name valueable. Gothic 3 was hyped to death but in my opinion its a shallow piece of junk in comparison to the other two games. I'd say you only include Gothic 1 on the list, since Gothic 2 was hyped quite a bit already. That shouldn't stop people fom getting Gothic 2 with its expansion though, because if you like Action-RPGs you really can't go wrong with it.

"Richard Burns Rally" should be somewhere on that list. Its a rally simulator and there aren't even that many. At least I don't know of any other than this one (no. Clon McRae does not count). It wasn't hyped too much.

I have to agree about "Riddick". I have it for my xbox. Its one of the best looking titles for that console (if not THE best looking one). It features a close to perfect mixture of action and stealth with stealth being a necessity and not an artificial limitation. It is also purely for mature audiences due to gruesome killing moves in the stealth mode and the general vibe and it pays off because the general violent atmosphere really does a lot for the game.
It is NOT a senseless gore porn piece ala Manhunt though!
I think it recieved more hype for the xbox version than the PC version though the xbox version was still way less hyped than Stalker or OFP, so if those are the boundaries of your list you HAVE to get Riddick on there too.

Of my collection, the best games that sort of fit the thread description some of which can be found on budget labels or budget bins everywhere-

Tron 2.0 - a must for fans of the film (so not overlooked by them I guess) but very good shooter in it's own right.

Independence War II - Edge of Chaos - Iwar was quite rated but the follow up may have been overlooked by many. Top top space shooter/adventure. Liked Elite? This is brilliant.

Shogo mobile armour division - another monolith shooter, somewhat overshadowed by others of the time but this is great- if you can get it to run on newer hardware.

now the tough one...
Vietcong 2 - I wish this ran as well for most people as it did for me - absolutely flawless on max settings even on my old system.
Once patched with the 3rd party add-on that gave the weapons realistic damage and added a load of maps this game started becoming part of what it should of been- both in MP and CO-OP - but so few hung around to ever see that..... ahhh whats the point it's too late for this game now and i'll just get upset.

i recently bought Scrapland real cheap (I liked the mood of american mcGee's alice) but haven't tried yet- any good?

"Arcanum" is downright awesome, but I'm not really sure how hyped it was. Just include it. Since you also have IL2 on that list, Arcanum can definately be included too.

Arcanum was totally underhyped and as a result undersold. While it got all around great reviews and was a blast to play, it had some bugs and the combat system was a bit off. It was one of ther early attempts at making a Real-Time/Turned Based hybrid (you could switch modes) and it wasn't as nice as, say, Fallout.

It's one of my all time favorite games. And I just found my play disk which I had thought I lost a year ago. This was amazing because the game has been out of production, you can't find it new anywhere and used copies are going for $50-$70.
