Got that far BUT..mixed amongst the custom maps (and in the sounds folder too) are some of the stock maps and now , after the patch , don't know which are stock and which are custom.
What would happen if I simply deleted the maps, sounds and texture folder contents....understand the stock maps are in the gcf files or something.

Its not just Maps files to clean the install up a bit
Maybe try deleting everything in the Cache folder, and renaming the maps folder to Maps_BAK, textures to Textures_BAK, staticsmeshes to StaticMeshes_BAK. There will probably be a lot of extra files in the system folder as well, *.ucl files mostly, and also *.u files (for example the after-hours anti-tank gun files). You should probably rename the system folder to system_BAK as well. Then verify the game files in steam.
This is most of the install file size tho, so you may as well shut down steam, rename the redorchestra folder to redorchestra_BAK, and move it to another location as a backup (not sure if moving it is totally necessary). then restart steam and verify the game files, it should reinstall RO i think. You could restore the ini files from the original if you want to keep your settings(key bindings etc)
