This only happens on Kauk, and is regardless of settings. I've gotten this since day one.


What I've tried:
Defragment option in Steam
Reinstall of RO
Complete reinstall of OS and Steam/RO (had to do it anyway, so thought I'd mention it as a step :))
General disk maitenence (it's not spyware, viruses, etc.)
Deletion of clientregistry.blob
validating files over steam
Da voodoo majik, mon
Profuse cursing
Staring at the monitor and mousing around the computer idly looking for potential problems


I'm out of stuff to try! :)

Whatever further info you need, just ask and I'll post it up. Drivers are up to date (though this occurs on any driver build I use), Direct X is up to date with no problems in DXDiag (or other programs), and other such goodness. Thanks ahead of time folks!

CPU temps stay low (coolermaster Jet 7 FTW!) and my GPU idles around 50 @ 10% fan speed (it gets lower if I turn the fan on full time). Under load I don't imagine it goes higher than 60, but I'll see if ATI tool has a way to log the temps and I'll run it through the RO-wringer, just to be sure.

I'll delete Kauk when I get home today, and report the findings here. Thanks mate!​

DOH I just realized the penetration mod was running (this was a botmatch to test if delete and verifying Kauk only had any effect). I will run it again without penetration mod going, but I doubt the results will be any different as it is only Kauk, and offline or online.

I'm not a techi, but it looks to me like it just can't find something. The odd part is, it's something different every time :( I think I'll try another full re-download some time this weekend, unless someone can come up with something.

I've an idea. Could it be the download on that particular download location is bad? Where does steam save such information? Is there a way that I can force steam to choose a certain (or at least another) location?

It would seem that download locations are chosen based on your location compared to server load. If I'm drawing from a server that not many RO players are on, it could just be that I'm the only one who noticed (as Kauk is one of my favorite maps, but not everyone shares that view).

Just a thought, though I admit full on that I don't know how the Steam distribution servers are set up.


EDIT: I just noticed, my VCore voltage is a tiny bit lower than what is stated as the CPU's operating voltage, even though it is set properly in BIOS (I set it manually). The operating voltage is 1.65, per AMD. I have it set to 1.65 in BIOS but I'm showing readings of it at 1.63. Could that potentially be a problem? The next setting I have in BIOS is 1.75, would that be too strong? I have very good cooling on the CPU and airflow through the case, so I'm not too worried about heat. I am however worried about potential CPU damage. Thoughts, anyone?

Update:

I set to cleaning out my case earlier, with the duster air and all that. Took the fan off the CPU heatsink and there was a nice little build up of dust in there. I cleaned all that out, reapplied thermal paste, checked temps for about an hour or so and everything appeared fine (shaved about two degrees off of the temp, guess it was starting to build up pretty bad after all those years ;)).

However, Kauk still crashes. Memory tests have turned up no errors (I ran two different ones) and I play way too many other games to believe it's video card. I have some extra components lying around though, and if I have the time this weekend I'll build up another machine and try the video card in it, just to make sure. I would like to grab that file from you Yoshi if it's still possible. May I PM you?

BTW, when I deleted some stuff (including Kauk) to make RO update it updated from content server 30. I don't know if that's significant or not.

Ugh. Totally clean install. I adjusted my player name and the display settings, then boom. Temps at time of crash were CPU 50 and GPU 51. I can get them both lower with some ease, but it hasn't mattered in the past.

Yosh, I've a question. It could possibly be a software conflict, right?


I have a Saitek X52 and Logi G15. They both have their own profiling software things. Could it be either one of those causing a problem? Logic would say that it's not the G15, as RO is a title that fully supports the G15 and all that, but what about the X52?

I'm thinking that when I have the time I'll go through and dig out the .DLLs and stuff for the joystick and remove them completely, unplug the stick, uninstall the software, all that jazz, and see if that makes any difference. I don't think it would, but I can't explicitly remember a time when I had RO installed but not the X52, so I'd feel better checking.


Just a thought, maybe it'll lead to a fix for some potential problems for other people if it turns out to be the case.
