Slowing down exit from Tanks (merged)

We've all snuck up behind a tank, only to have the driver pop out instantaniously and spray us down before we can even react...

Both of these situations are "gamey"

The first one is not. Crews for tanks could easily open hatches and shoot nearby infantry. For some tanks, like the Elephant (which had no machinegun), this was actually standard practice and the crew had SMGs for this very purpose.

Popping a head out a hatch is a lot different from exiting the tank instantly. :) For one, you have a much greater field of vision and movement outside the tank.

This sounds like a very good short term solution to this really annoying problem of people jumping out of tanks instantly, its bad enough positions in tank can be changed instantly, but jumping out really affects gameplay to the worse.

So, entering tank should make someone enter the open hatch state, ie not inside but looking out of hatch - this should be immediate, and then person would be required to take a time penalty while going down, all art for this already exists, so all that's needed is effectively only allow exit if hatch is open, and upon entry person appears in open hatch.

MGers in tanks will be a hole in this, but it can be required to get into MG position via either driving or commander doors, which is IMO more realistic since no special door for MGer appears.

Only allow exit from a vehicle when the hatch is open.

VERY good suggestion IMO. Also the exit itself should get a 2-3 second delay, you don't get out instantly even through open hatch in RL. In addition to this, leaving a tank through commanders station would spawn the player not at the ground, but at the turret top or engine plate behind the turret. Realistic, cool, and makes great observation platform with binoculars :)

I suggested something similar, about tank commanders opening their hatches to use small arms fire to dispatch of infantry instead of teleporting out. Even if the hatches are open though, there should be a good delay before you can exit, so as it have yourself exposed to enemy fire if you're exiting on the battlefield -- something people shouldn't be doing anyway.

No, the Elefant tank had an Mg-34 in its hull you are thinking of the Ferdinand tank the Elefant's "predesesor".....well the unmodernized 1943 version of it.
The Ferdinand had a loose Mg-34 that was shoot down the barrel to keep infantry at bay it was also shot from on top of the tank as well as underneth the main gun and all tank crews used pistol hatches found in all tanks to keep infantry away from their tank especially if they are out of the Machine guns turing radius.:)

I still don't see the hatch opening really "fixing" the issue. Sure, the hatch opens, but your avatar still "teleports" out someplace, often times on an unpredictable side...

Well, it would give you enough time to switch to another weapon after having fired a faust before being sprayed. I like this idea better than having no delay whatsoever.

Only allow exit from a vehicle when the hatch is open. If you're in the gunsite or zoomed in driver view, you have to mousewheel scroll back to open hatches before you can hit use to jump out.

This causes a (small) delay while the already existing hatch open animation runs. It also has the affect of giving warning to people outside that you're exiting the tank (ie they see the hatch open).

I think this is a brilliant suggestion which would not only add to realism (obviously not absolute) but should be relatively simple to implement.

The other scenario is if you are in a tank and you know another tank has got the drop on you/about to finish you off, you can 'teleport' from the vehicle at the same moment it is destroyed and yet be totally unharmed :/

If this were to be implemented along with (seriously) beefed-up tank engines next update i would have to say that RO had acquired near perfection (maybe throw in some new uniform skins to be absolutely sure though hehe)!
