hm, why does it take 2 penitrations to kill a tank?

Yes, that is gamey too, right up there with having the equivalent of tank "head shots" in the system. Any penetration should stand a good chance of destroying or incapacitating a tank, regardless of whether it hits some magical box of instant doom. There should also be a chance for nothing to happen, even if you aim right for the magic "head shot" spots.

chance? dude, this is real life simulator, where a hit in right spot, kills you,
there is no chance of surviving if your ammo magazin gets hit
or if a man gets hit in the head, or heart

do you play eve-online by any chance?:p

My "head shot" reference was to "twitch" FPS play, where connecting X to Y guaruntees Z. Sure, a hit to the ammunition magazine more than likely results in the destruction of the tank, but that's not 100% guarunteed. (What if the penetration is only by a 20mm AP round that has lost most of its mass and velocity by the time it passes through the armor? The round might just hit a shell and bounce off or drop to the floor, if it wasn't deflected by something else between the armor and the ammo.)

In real life, hitting the "red box" area on tank with a penetrating shot would not 100% guaruntee any one outcome. Any number of things could happen before that shot actually connects with and ignites the ammo magazines. Plus, there are all sorts of areas of a tank other than the "red boxes" where a penetrating shot could result in complete destruction of the tank for a variety of reasons.

Once fixed, if the shot penetrates but does not hit a critical component, I believe the tank will lose "hitpoints." It's gamey, but until they code more critical locations, they won't be able to represent this any other way. When that happens, it may be easier to think of this as a shot that considerably weakened the armor, rather than a shot that penetrated.

In the mod (where the old version of the tank code worked fine), you'd regularly have one-shot kills, or just ricochets. OCCASIONALLY you'd have tanks get hit, start smoking, but not die. Mostly, though, it was one-shot kills or no kill at all.

For the record, in the current game, you can still get a sense of this from doing things like angling your tank when taking on the enemy instead of facing them directly head-on. You'll get a LOT of ricochets if you do it right, especially in a T34 or other sloped-armor tank.

Waht the penetration code will fix (hopefully) are instances where you're at point blank range, your barrel is pointed directly where a penetrating shot will hit the ammo of the tank, you shoot, and the other tank goes from "white" to "red" or "yellow". Once penetration works, that shot would tear through to the ammo and kablooie. One dead tank.
