Trench maps?

I'm planning to do a trench map for my second map. Hoping to do a full minute or two artillery barrage before the attack as well (often barrages before an attack were over 100 minutes long). Might even get around to doing a map based on the Volkhov Front and Leningrad Front soldiers linking up. Hoping to have half the Russians on each side of the map trying to reach eachother with the Germans in the middle defending their trenches. So many ideas, now all I need is a map editor.

Well that is Eric Haaest whos implying that he wasnt in the books, jeeze, hes even implying that his wife should have been writing his last 13 books and been taking part in "sleezy pornographic" movies. Besides, why do you think you become arrogant when you are experiencing such an horrific war, ffs.

And what do you mean by "unwilling to fight for germany"?? Would you be so eager in temp of -50 ?

It seemed unrealistic sometimes for me too ofcourse.. but its war.
I just think the books sucked, that's all. I think it didn't portray the war in it's true manner, it seemed more like somekind of an action/entertainment book. A good war book that I've read is "All Quiet on the Western Front" by Remarque and it was much more believable.

Stationary gun emplacements would be awesome. Like a Maxim or a [SIZE=-1] DShK heavy machine gun. Instead of two trenches opposite eachother how about one side has the trench while the advancing army uses shell holes, tall grass, and wreakage to advantage. A night battle with fog would be pretty challenging as well. Tracers would be more useful.

Meh, Trenches weren't a big focus in WW2 as much as they were in WW1.

Really, I believe there wasn't much trench-to-trench fighting like what you're invisioning.

Basovka does a good job revealing the use of trenches in WW2. They were routes dug on the way to a to-be-captured stronghold. They had temporary command posts amd the like, but were not meant to be permanent fighting places for troops.

In WWI the figthing on the eastern front was a fight between two monachys where the leaders had similar wievs on things.
They only fought because of treatys they made prior to the war.

WWII on the eastern front was a fight to the death between two idiaologies that both wanted to extingouis (sp) the other one.
Russians killed and tortured germans and Germans killed and tortured Russians.
Be it civilian or military.
According to personal accounts I have read about the Eastern front, Hassel is not that far off.

Seriously, you should read a book about the Ost front.

About the book, I liked Kordts at first but after a while he just became a bitter jerk. Poor Frietag was an awesome soldier though. Remember when the t34 broke through the defenses and crashed into the pond and Frietag jumped up on there and blew it up! By the way this book mentions trenches in it, as well as fortified buildings.

Trench war fair was rarley done in WW2, but in WW1 it was the most use tatic

Actually, it was used a great deal, but depending by whom.

Panzer/Armored/mech/motorized divisions would rarely dig in since they were on the move, but on foot infantry would dig in every time they stopped for the night.

I've got a few films "Manner Geggen Panzer" (a german anti tank training film) and "Mein Kreig" (home films but a german soldier) which shows soldiers on the eastern front dig in and make complex trench systems.

Actually, German Panzer crews were known to dig fox holes and drive their tanks over them so they could sleep under them just in case they got arty shelled at night.

From what I've heard the trench system in Stalingrad was fairly complex and even the bulgarians who were over runned were able to delay the Soviets becaues of their complex mine setup and trench (i think it was only a few hours though since they had no AT weapons other than mines).

Secondly, Kursk was probaly the most complex trench system ever build up in order to stop the German offensive. Anti-tank trenches, massive emplacements of AT-Guns, bunkers, etc.

And a medieval castle :) And the T-34 wasn't really blown up. The crew just got out with their ears bleeding (from the pressure) and were shot into mincemeat by the Germans, even after they were already dead!

To get back on topic, TRENCHES WERE USED! In WW2 the entire war wasn't moving. Some sections of the line remained static. And when you have a static line you don't just stand out in the open. You DIG IN. You fortify your position in case the enemy attacks, which is usually the case. When the **** hits the fan, you're going to want to be as close to the center of the Earth as possible.
