Guy sajer's The forgotten Soldier is also a first hand account of war on the Eastern Front....he survived the whole lot , not too many books like this

Very cool.

Here's a few from my shelf:

'The 900 Days: The Siege of Leningrad' by Harrison E Salisbury
gut wrenching to read what that city went through, and what the people who LED that city through it had to endure in the aftermath.

'Soldat: Reflections of a German Soldier, 1936-1949' by Siegfried Knappe.
this guy rose through the ranks of horse drawn artillery, was one of the last graduates of General Staff school, and was among the last to see Hitler in the Fuehrer Bunker. It continues through his time as a POW in the SOviet Union. A classic and a must read.

Panzer Commander: The Memoirs of Colonel Hans Von Luck. Similarly good to Soldat, also continuing through his time as a POW.

America, Russia, and the Cold War, 1949-1992 by Walter LaFeber. A good primer on that subject.

American Diplomacy by George F Kennan. An absolute must read, including Kennan's 'Long Telegram' printed in Foreign Affairs under the pseudonym 'X' entitled 'The Sources of Soviet Conduct.'
