I use smokes to help my team. Usually, when I play with my clan, we throw smokes to move in more cover.

Smoke use is different in every map, and not only that - it is different in almost every situation.
Basovka for example is a classic example
On one hand, as a German, you want to use smoke to help your friends cross! On the other hand, if a MG is mowing everyone down, you can throw it on his spot and he will be disabled for a far longer time then just shooting the guy standing there.
Smoking the entire trench would severe the ability of most Russians there to shoot incoming Germans.
As a Russian you would to use Smoke to help your friends come to the Trench or mask a flanking movement.
A classic trick is to throw smoke yourself on the route to the trench and then throw artillery on that area! your killings will be phenomenal - work every time.
