Forum Rules

CHANGES
  • Items changed, or highlighted for future attention, on 20 July 2013 are highlighted in yellow.
Global Rules
  • Forum moderators may or may not be Tripwire Interactive staff members, but either way, please respect them, as they are the authority of the forums. Speaking to them with intentional spite will not be tolerated and may result in the loss of your forum privileges.
  • Any decisions made by any member of staff or moderator are final and not subject to discussion. Doing so may result in a ban from the site. The owners of Tripwire Interactive Forums reserve the right to remove, edit, move or close any thread for any reason, as well as to remove access to the forums for any individuals with or without warning for breaches of the rules.
  • If you have a complaint regarding another user, PM the appropriate moderators, or if you have an administrative issue, [RO]schneidzekk.
General Behaviour
  • Use the search function before posting. Chances are your question has already been answered.
  • Use a title that describes the content of your post. Don't use all caps or special characters to draw attention either in the title or the body of the post.
  • Up to 10 emoticons are allowed in a post
  • Political discussions are prohibited.
  • Flaming - We do not tolerate abusive, malicious, personal attacks. You will be banned if you persist in this behavior.
  • Trolls - Anyone deliberately antagonizing other forum users by posting 'flame bait' type messages is not welcome. You will be banned (possibly without warning depending on the severity of the issue) if you persist in this behavior.
  • Personal insults (directed at anyone) will result in a ban. If the behavior is not corrected, it will be made more permanent.
  • Constructive criticism is welcome. However keep in mind we (and other forums goers) may not agree with you. If you can't keep the conversation civil, you will be removed from the forums.
  • The use of hyperbole, one liners, and images as part of a forum debate is likely to get you infracted. You have many ways to participate and be a constructive part of this community, even when you disagree.
  • To make the highlighted bits above 100% clear to everyone, the following WILL NOT BE TOLERATED:
    1. Personal attacks, insults, antagonism of any forum-goers, moderators or Tripwire Interactive staff.
    2. Breaches of confidentiality and privacy of any sort.
    3. Any form of racism, bigotry or attacks on race, creed or color.
    4. Linking to posts on other forums related to ANY of the above, whether you are the originator or not, without exception.
  • There has been too much in the way of abhorrent personal behaviors in the past. These will cease. It doesn't matter who started it or who reacted to it - it will all result in moderator action. If you have to indulge your hatreds, for whatever reason, go do it elsewhere - and do not try and drag our forum-goers over to enjoy your hatreds.
  • We understand that people have strong feelings about our games, what we do for a living and how we respond (or don't) to comments on the forums. We all aren't going to agree about everything. So, BE CIVIL in your disagreements!
DO NOTs
  • DO NOT Transmit any message, information, data, text, software or graphic files, or other materials ("Content") that is unlawful (including illegal drug usage), harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, libelous, hateful or racially, ethnically, sexually or otherwise objectionable. This includes publicizing private information, such as individual's real names, IP addresses and anything else that might be used to identify them to the freakier members of the internet. This also means you may NOT publically share private communications (PM, email or anything else) without the original poster's permission.
  • DO NOT Post or transmit any Content that contains a virus, Trojan horse or other mischievous Content.
  • DO NOT Post or transmit any unsolicited advertising, promotional materials, "junk mail", "spam", "chain letters", "pyramid schemes" or any other form of solicitation.

  • DO NOT post cheats or exploits; THIS INCLUDES ALL/ANY REFERENCES TO HACKING, PIRATED SOFTWARE etc.

  • Avatars:
    Avatars are disabled.
  • All signatures should not exceed the following size limits, you can have both text and images

  • - For images in signatures: 1 image up to 400 pixels wide, 150 pixels tall and 100kb in size plus 2 lines normal size text and up to 100 chars per line
Netiquette: Written text has no inflection, and, as such, you should be careful how you write your messages as interpretation will vary from person to person. Please take advantage of the built-in emoticons to add such expression to your words. Please remember the golden rule: to treat other forum users the way you would like to be treated. Please use common courtesy, and enjoy using Red Orchestra's forums
Offensive material
The following is a list of some things that MAY be considered "offensive" by the moderators and the team. This is NOT an exclusive list and it does depend very much on context.

Crossing the line into "offensive" territory is likely to get you asked to change your name, sig or avatar or to withdraw/delete posts. This will be done politely by the moderators. If you refuse to comply further action WILL be taken once started, ultimately leading to banning from the forums.

A key point: please attempt to use your brains. What is mild humour to you may well be deeply offensive to others. While we have no intention of acting as politically-correct "thought police", we are on the lookout for those things that can cause offense and, in some cases, are actually still illegal in some jurisdictions.
  1. Names recalling notorious war criminals or personalities.
  2. Names recalling atrocities and war crimes in general, or units with particularly odious histories.
  3. Use of obscenities and expletives.
  4. Blatant racism, mysogynism or many other "ism"s.
  5. Use of symbolism and regalia recalling Nazism or Fascism; this does not include pics of soldiers who happen to have such symbols on their uniform, unless we feel this has been done to provoke. Please note that many Nazi symbols (including the Swastika) are still illegal in Germany and other countries and considered deeply offensive by many Europeans.
  6. Use of symbolism and regalia recalling Stalinism.
  7. On both the previous two, the moderators' views on the intention and impact of use of such symbols will be final - not yours. Please be understanding if you are advised to change something.
  8. In general, if a sig/avatar represents your allegiances in-game and is clearly "in part", it is likely to be fine; if the moderators feel you are trying to demonstrate unpalatable political allegiances, or to use it in an attempt to ridicule or provoke others you WILL be asked to change it. RO is NOT the place to make any extremist political statements of any kind.
Examples:
So people get the idea, some examples that would be considered offensive, numbered as above:
  1. "Hitler", "Beria"
  2. "NKVD Blocking Detachment", "Einsatzgruppen"
  3. This one should be pretty obvious...
  4. So should this - and it includes calling all Germans "Nazis" and all Soviets/Russians "Commies". It got boring 50 years ago, so stop it.
  5. Use of swastikas, fasces, SS-runes and so on for the Axis.
  6. There is actually very little overt symbolism from the Stalinist era; the hammer-and-sickle isn't offensive per se.
A simple rule-of-thumb: many Europeans find Nazi symbolism of any sort offensive; many Americans still find Soviet symbolism offensive. Engage your brain before using.

Final Note: this is NOT open to debate, so please do NOT start whining and moaning if a moderator asks you to change something. They will advise at first, giving reasons, then, if you take no notice, they will step up the pressure through to banning.

If relaunching the game attracts more people then I'm all for it, because it really does deserve more players.

I think the only problem with expanding the game past Stalingrad (at the moment) is that TWI invested a lot of time in making the battle chatter specific to that battle. Saying things like "You'll be in the Volga by nightfall, Ivan" might be a little immersion breaking if you're fighting in Berlin for instance

Yes, that is something of a problem. If I recall correctly, the major Stalingrad-specific lines are "You'll be in the Volga by nightfall" and "Every seven seconds a German dies in Stalingrad", as well as the round-start speeches "They have failed to take our city", and some other stuff I am probably forgetting.

It could be easy to just take them out of the game. Or better yet, TWI could commission some more lines from the voice actors or even expand the voices to 4+ different varieties for each side.

I like alot of the ideas mentioned, but one I'm surprised not to hear is to change the PICTURE on the box/download! The hooded/masked Alien/German with a weapon that NOBODY identifies with the battle of Stalingrad has always been a real turnoff for me. I actually like the focus of Stalingrad only, and I think that there are more than enough potential maps just from that battle to keep modders busy for years to come. I just feel like a more realistic representation of a German soldier would go a long way to making people want to check out the game. The current guy always looks like Darth Vader to me- drives me nuts!

The expansion pack idea is especially good, particularly for future content. Right now I do kind of agree that a 'relaunch' is needed, I love the game, and generally it plays very well for me, but for so many people to have so many issues with it, it's going to require a pretty significant upgrade to turn around the low level of people playing.
Because there's been alot of talk of a 'free weekend' to attract new folks, I guess I'll also throw in that maybe there should be a 'starter' screen that explains each mode and how it works, how the levelling up works, how to join a squad, how to use the VOIP, etc. Alot of this very basic info was never explained and therefore never utilized. If the first time I played on-line I had seen a screen that said 'Push 'P' to talk to your squad', I would have talked to my squaddies right away! Anything you can do to make it easier for people, especially newbies, to talk to each other in game is a good thing. Communication and teamwork is what makes this a great game, it also makes friends and gives you information, and in the long run makes you want to play more.
Anyway, I'm very grateful to the whole TW team for making such a good game- let's ALL pitch in to make it a great game!

More weapons would help a lot. That way the "mapartists" of the community have more choices, when creating a map.
I was thinking about weapons like: G43, MG42, Panzerfaust, Panzerschreck, STG44, FG42 and PPS.

Right now, we don't need more maps from Tripwire, we need more things/items for the mapcreators of the community, they will give us maps. And the more options they have, when it comes to what to put in these map, the better the maps are gonna be.

I agree. A relaunch is a big deal. Anything less and it comes across as gimmicky. Essentially, you need to double what you released to offset all the negatives.

On a more serious note, I'm not so sure if a rerelease will be a good idea. It might confuse people a lot and that's not exactly what we want. I consider the new content patch with Classic Mode, Action mode and the Mamayev Kurgan map and the free weekend as some kind of relaunch. With some new trailers and advertisements on Steam and lots of bugs fixed you can almost call it a whole new game.

If, however, the game will be relaunched, a name change wouldn't hurt. As some people here already said, a wider focus wouldn't hurt. Stalingrad is a cool setting and I love it, but it's a relatively small part of the whole Eastern Front. Red Orchestra: Scorched Steppes or whatever sounds cool would do.

Some new trailers showcasing the new gamemodes and the new map would also be cool. Maybe if the custom map problem is fixed TWI could include some footage of custom maps to showcase that. I think that would attract some more people to RO2.

As a cherry on top of the cake, the RS team could also release a new trailer . Then the relaunch will be perfect.
We agree. A totally new rebranding of HOS is in order: new name, cover picture-- all the rest.

The aspect I need to disagree is music. As somebody near 40-- hey, I love Wagner and Mozart, amongst others.. However, a younger crowd will always be looking for a fast sound.

In marketing, music and sound is very important.

Action mode should have a different affect, then classic or realism. It should be of a faster pace.

I don't post a lot, but after trying to play the game today and failing to experience what I wanted (not for the first time) and shutting it off, I have to say something.

I don't have as much of an opinion as some of you but all I know is that to do nothing [major] would be a mistake. 500 players online and 2 servers that are proper populated (40+ real people) just makes my heart ache. I love this game but my new computer and myself deserve a game that can provide an experience consistently and RO2 could be the game if it just fixed these issues or changed.

Re-launch, don't re-launch, I don't care, just fix something in a time frame or else you can kiss even the regulars goodbye and the thought of attracting new gamers, well, that'll be a dream. RO was a great game that had longevity, right now RO2 isn't even a year old and it looks bleak. Very sad for me indeed considering I paid good money to get a computer able to play it.

Side note: I would love to see Iron Europe released, WWI is the greatest but none of these would ever succeed if the core game fails. Those guys also deserve more so let's get it done.

                Thanks for your time.

I have to agree with the author of the topic, the biggest mistake was limiting the game to just the Battle of Stalingrad. It has simply put too many historical limitations in the way, resulting in few weapons and less diverse maps.

That coupled with a lot of gameplay changes, such as a very arcade tank control system, and a lot needs to be done to bring RO2 back to RO:Ost standards I'm afraid. I am also sad that Tripwire didn't notice the many improvements added in the Darkest Hour game. I mean that game still has atleast as many players as RO2 has, despite DH being based on RO:Ost.

I wouldn't say that. Lots of MkBs with bayonets, sniper rifles with bayonets, PPsh with box magazines it that time,... that doesn't sound like "historical limitations" to me. lol.

I've lately returned to RO2. Now it's finaly playable and quite well optimised. But still there are stupid unlocks like non-in game-detachable bayonet, boring maps, only symbolic motorized warfare and annoying non-native chatter. As i remeber devs said that's because of amount of important information that you have to understand in your language, which was of course a total bull****, cause there's realy nothing more than "For Germany!" or "Let'em feel the cold steel!" in that "Battle Chatter".

I've said this before but there is a precedent for successful re-launch: Unreal Tournament 2004. UT2K3 was such a flop that a year later UT2K4 came out, which was essentially UT2K3 but with all of the features added back in that made it an Unreal Tournament game, and was marketed to erase everything that UT2K3 did wrong from the collective consciousness; it even included a money back voucher if you'd bought UT2K3. UT2K4 went on to become arguably the most successful UT game of the franchise.

RO2 doesn't need to be repackaged and resold, it just needs to be fixed and re-focussed then pushed hard (marketing) with new content along with a major patch - which is by and large what seems to be happening.
