The "anything" thread

I don't live in the UK anymore, i moved to St Petersburg a month or so back. I see Communist party rallies at least once a month if not more so, the communist party being the second largest party in Russia after Putin's. Babushki i dedushki still refer to the city as Leningrad, i have never met one that does not miss the Soviet Union.
A country where the standard of living was higher than that in the US, a country that pioneered space exploration and science.

You seem to idolise CIA sponsored dictatorships whose track record of torture and death compared to the size of the population far exceeds that of any "communist" (non-US friendly) countries.
Travel to Cuba, see the free healthcare, free education up to degree level and the constitutional right to a job. I already have ;)
Oooooh wow, communist rallies. Russia is not communist anymore, and rallies don't make it as such. And living in your fantasy land you call "Leningrad" is quite sad and delusional. That would be like me being a neo-Nazi living in Kaliningrad and only recognizing it as Koenigsberg. That's truly screwed up.

It seems as though the entire Russian population has forgotten the purges of the Soviets and the Chinese. Over 100 million people have died as a result of communist governments. Go ask any Ukrainian, and I'm sure they will be glad to tell you how communism helped their people.

And no. Despite neither of us having exact records of the numbers killed by both parties, it is generally accepted that no other types of government has killed, tortured, brainwashed, and enslaved as much as communist governments have.

Don't get me wrong, I know socialism can work and I am not completely against it. The only place I would be against it is in the US, simply because our population is too lazy and it could never work here (even though it's heading that way with the amount of people having government dependency). The sole reason we are able to sustain as a country is because we can take advantage of impoverished people who have no means to escape their rulers. I have no delusions to this, as this is what our country has been founded on. But what I am against is the communism that evolved through the 20th century. It's killed too many people, people that could have contributed to society and the world.

And personally I feel bad for Cuba being taken advantage of by the Soviets, just as other countries we have taken advantage of. I have nothing against Cuba, as they do moderately okay for themselves.

The only thing I can applaud communism on was their progression in women's rights. Afghan women truly flourished under communist rule, as did those of East Germany and other eastern bloc countries.

And yeah, bad spelling error. My apologies. :D

You sed that

And yes I did, but your statement seemed to emphasize that I said Afghanistan was a part of the USSR and the eastern bloc.

My statement said that women flourished under communist rule. Are you aware the Soviets invaded and occupied Afghanistan a few decades ago?

Did i say that i call it Leningrad? No, please read it again. Babushki and Dedushki or Old women and grandfathers call it Leningrad.

Have you ever been to Ukraine or met a Ukrainian? Ukraine is a stupid idea, its four countries in one. The North wants to be Russian, the East wants to be some stupid Crimean state, the south want to be independent and the west are polish.
Please stop lecturing me on places you have almost certainly never been to whereas i have first hand experience of. I am going to Belarus in June for the Brestskaya Krepost anniversary, Belarussians are proud of their history (and present as they are still led by the Communist Party), they and Lithuania lost the most civilians to the fascist aggressors and their extermination policy. Living there is good and cheap and the people are friendly.

But USSR didin't really have any rule there
Yes they did. They had over 100,000 troops there. They installed a communist government in Kabul and other large towns in Afghanistan. It's these towns that women enjoyed many more freedoms than those stuck in backward conservative hardline towns.

Edit:

My mistake. I misread that part.

No, I have never been. But just because you think it is a stupid idea doesn't mean that if you asked a Ukrainian about the Holodomor that they won't curse the Soviets. But it's ridiculous for me to take a communist sympathizer's word for how happy and proud a population is to be communist. That's like me saying Americans are proud of their history and of being a Republic or North Korea saying how happy everyone is to be North Korean and communist. But I'm sure eeeverything would be better if eastern Europe just consolidated in one giant alliance again. ;)

The USSR did not install any government, in fact if you knew your history you would know that the SpetsNaz stormed the Tajbeg palace on Christmas 1979, killing the "communist" leader Hafizullah Amin. Afghanistan had had several communist governments before the intervention, Taraki, Amin who was then succeeded by Babrak Kamal. Afghanistan had their own revolution, but Amin was a idiot and kept killing his people and ruining the revolution so the Soviet Union stepped in to stop his reign of terror.

Why I would fain keep well clear of this obnoxiously political discussion started by Herr Ostmann, in which the ghosts of two opposites are brought back from beyond the grave to duke it out once more by proxy, true to their form, I have just one remark to make: it is Polish.
Have a pleasant day! :)

Poles are always butthurt, in June i have to travel through Poland with a NKVD uniform in my bag :D I'm going to the Brestskaya Krepost reconstruction and its cheaper to fly to Warsaw instead of Minsk. I've already had German security empty my bag which had my NKVD uniform in, lets see what Polish security think of it.
