Well, staying ON TOPIC with the bolt action theme before 1945, I would try for an M1903 (post WWI, as old ones have durability issues), as 30'06 is easy to find in the US, and it has full bayonet support. After that, a P.38 for a pistol, as 9mm is much more plentiful than .45, as it is a common military and NATO caliber. Also, it's a simple reliable pistol made before 1945 and there aren't many other platforms before 1945 that support 9mm.
