[Game] Max Payne 3

I don't know about you guys, but I've always been a big Max Payne fan. I'm also very excited for MP3. I'm not totally sold on the setting, however: going away from the noir setting of a dreary city like New York or Chicago to sunny South America.

That said, I think I can forgive that when I watch these great trailers ... I love how Rockstar always has narrated stuff. It's classy, informative, and always impressive.

I know there was a thread on this a while ago, but I decided to make an official "Game" thread for it.

Whilst Brazil is not a backward country by any means this could be like the Heart Of Darkness for Max as even though Africa is a sunny lovely place that book is grim. In the US sure there is crime and corruption but it no where near as open, the Max Payne games have always been about madness and this looks like it going to drive Max to that point where he "clicks" again...

This last video they released really bothered me, the wording is just so wrong.

With Max Payne 3, Rockstar has set out to re-imagine the gunplay mechanics of a 3rd person action shooter. By finding a way to implement the precision targeting of a first person game and redesigning weapons and tactical movement systems to make the game as immersive and cinematic as Max's dark story.

To solve the challenge of a 3rd person game that combines a constant visible lead character with consistently fluid movements and controlled precision gunplay, each mechanic was painstakingly designed and tuned.

They're trying to play it off as if R* invented something new with this game, while in reality, at least based on the gameplay footage we've seen, it plays more or less exactly like the previous Max Payne games. Most of the gameplay mechanics seem to be unchanged. The animations are a bit better, but the principle behind how they work remains the same (positioning upper body towards the target while aiming and running in any given direction).

Don't get me wrong, all of this is great, I love the fact that they didn't try to reinvent the wheel here. There's two reasons I loved the previous games, the great noir story and good gameplay mechanics (well, graphics were awesome as well at the time). It remains to be seen what they've done with the story, but it seems like R* pretty much copied the gameplay mechanics.

And here in lies my problem with that video. R* is trying to take credit for gameplay innovations that Remedy made 10 years ago. Yeah, I get it, they want to create hype and draw attention to the game mechanics that make Max Payne unique, but these claims could also be made by still playing homage to the previous games and developer.

The protection company was wise to hire a man with bullet time and an infinite tolerance for painkillers. Definitely looking forward to this one, though the change in developer and setting makes me a bit nervous. Max Payne was an instant classic, I hope they don't mess it up.
Well the Remedy guys(aka Max Payne 1&2 devs) said Max Payne 3 is awesome and they're proud of how their work is continued

Yeah I agree that they're really not "redesigning" anything gameplay wise -- it just LOOKS more natural. Which is still certainly awesome. Of course, now it looks like you can stay on the ground after landing, which you couldn't do in past MP games.

The only real gameplay change/addition/enhancement is the fact that weapons now have momentum, so you can't swing a shotgun as fast as a pistol. I love this.

I'm also loving the major role that Euphoria Physics is having in this game:

GTA IV - Euphoria Physics Engine - YouTube

I'm seeing awesome reactions to recoil, bullet impacts, and collisions with terrain, which are all enhanced by the bullet time. Overall, it's looking amazingly fun to play!

Probably still amazingly short and no multiplayer like MP 1 and 2. While both good games they have no replay value. Basically, you give 50 euros to have fun for 8 hours, that's not a good deal for me. When I bought MP2 I finished it the same day, I was shocked and felt ripped off, fortunately mods kept me playing it a bit longer so I hope it will be the same in MP3 which I might buy when it's a budget game.

That's nothing new. With such games it was always like this:

wanting to play it day 1 vs waiting till price drops

"When you activate Bullet Time, one of several special "Burst" powers in Max Payne 3's online multiplayer, only players in your field of vision are slowed. What does that mean? It means you better damn well make sure no one is behind you when you activate it."

This is one of the most retarded ideas I've ever heard. Some other player will come along and see some fools stuck in slow motion and pop them all with ease. The Specialists did it the only right way: bullet time is rewarded for kills and rarely found as a pickup, and when it is activated EVERYONE on the server is slowed.

I would have to agree. Seeing guys hovering all the time is a terrible idea. That video was full of sloppy looking everything. Every gun fight was a guy shooting at his target straight on from about 10 feet away. The graphics were jittery and rough too. I'm still excited but that was rough.
